What Is a Needle Valve?
A needle valve is a small-bore flow control device that uses a long, tapered, needle-shaped plunger moving in and out of a conical seat to regulate flow with high precision. It functions similarly to a globe valve but is designed for much smaller bore sizes (1/8” to 1”) and higher working pressures (up to 10,000+ psi).
When to Use a Needle Valve
Needle valves are the standard choice for instrumentation tubing, sampling systems, gauge isolation, hydraulic systems, and any application requiring fine flow adjustment at high pressures. They connect to tubing via compression fittings or threaded (NPT) connections and are standard components in instrument manifolds for differential pressure transmitters.
How a Needle Valve Works
The stem has a long, tapered point (the “needle”) that fits into a matching conical seat. Rotating the handwheel advances or retracts the needle through the seat opening. Because the taper is gradual, a full turn of the handwheel changes the flow area by only a small amount. This gives the operator precise control over flow rate, far more accurate than a globe valve or ball valve.
Typical needle valves require 8 to 12 full turns from closed to fully open, compared to one-quarter turn for a ball valve. This fine granularity is exactly what instrumentation applications demand.

Applications
