DI Pipe Standards: ISO 2531, EN 545
Selecting the correct standard for DI pipe depends on the project location, the fluid service, and the end client’s specifications. While the mechanical requirements are broadly similar across standards, there are important differences in pressure class designations, dimensional tolerances, and testing protocols.
DI Pipe Standards Overview
| Standard | Scope | Origin | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 2531 | DI pipes, fittings, accessories | International (ISO) | Global reference standard |
| EN 545 | DI pipes for water pipelines | European (CEN) | Potable water, raw water |
| EN 598 | DI pipes for sewage | European (CEN) | Sewage and wastewater |
| EN 969 | DI pipes for gas | European (CEN) | Gas distribution |
| AWWA C151/A21.51 | DI pipe (centrifugal cast) | North America (AWWA) | Water and wastewater |
| AWWA C150/A21.50 | DI pipe wall thickness design | North America (AWWA) | Wall thickness selection |
| ISO 7186 | DI fittings for pressure pipes | International (ISO) | DI fittings |
| BS EN 545 | DI pipes for water (UK adoption) | UK (BSI) | UK water projects |
Pressure Classes
DI pipe standards use different pressure classification systems. EN 545 uses a C-class system (C25, C30, C40) based on wall thickness, while ISO 2531 uses a K-class system (K7, K8, K9, K10):
| Standard | Class | Typical Wall (DN 300) | Max. Allowable Pressure (PFA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EN 545 | C25 | 5.6 mm | 25 bar |
| EN 545 | C30 | 6.4 mm | 32 bar |
| EN 545 | C40 | 7.9 mm | 40 bar |
| ISO 2531 | K7 | 5.0 mm | Design dependent |
| ISO 2531 | K8 | 5.6 mm | Design dependent |
| ISO 2531 | K9 | 6.4 mm | Design dependent |
| AWWA C151 | Thickness Class 50 | 7.4 mm | Per AWWA C150 |
| AWWA C151 | Thickness Class 51 | 7.9 mm | Per AWWA C150 |
Mechanical Requirements
All DI pipe standards require similar minimum mechanical properties for the base ductile iron material:

|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile strength (min.) | 420 MPa | 420 MPa | 420 MPa (60 ksi) |
| Yield strength (min.) | 300 MPa | 300 MPa | 300 MPa (42 ksi) |
| Elongation (min.) | 10% | 10% | 10% |
| Brinell hardness | 230 HB max | 230 HB max | 230 HB max |
| Hydrostatic test | Required | Required | Required |
| Microstructure | Nodular graphite | Nodular graphite | Nodular graphite |
Testing Requirements
| Test | ISO 2531 | EN 545 | AWWA C151 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hydrostatic test | Yes (factory) | Yes (factory) | Yes (factory) |
| Tensile test | Per lot | Per lot | Per lot |
| Visual inspection | 100% | 100% | 100% |
| Dimensional check | Per lot | Per lot | Per lot |
