What Is ASTM A352 LCB?

ASTM A352 LCB is a cast carbon steel grade engineered for low-temperature pressure service. It provides guaranteed Charpy impact toughness down to -46°C (-50°F), filling the gap between standard ASTM A216 WCB (-29°C) and the cryogenic stainless grades required below -101°C.

When to Use ASTM A352 LCB

LCB is the go-to material for cast valve bodies, bonnets, and pressure-containing parts operating in cold climates or handling chilled fluids. Typical applications include:

  • LNG receiving terminals and regasification units
  • Gas processing and NGL fractionation plants
  • Cold-climate pipeline valve stations (Arctic, sub-Arctic)
  • Cryogenic storage tank isolation valves (above -46°C)
  • Depressurization systems where Joule-Thomson cooling drops metal temperature

Any piping system with a minimum design metal temperature (MDMT) between -29°C and -46°C will specify A352 LCB rather than A216 WCB.

Testing Requirements

Every A352 LCB casting requires mandatory Charpy V-notch impact testing at -46°C. The average absorbed energy of three specimens must meet or exceed 20.3 J (15 ft-lbs), with no single specimen below 16.3 J (12 ft-lbs). This is not a supplementary requirement; it is built into the base specification.

Additional testing typically includes radiographic or ultrasonic examination per ASME B16.34 for valve castings, hydrostatic testing per the applicable valve standard, and mill test certificates documenting chemistry, mechanicals, and impact results.

Heat treatment is mandatory: normalized and tempered, or quenched and tempered. As-cast material is not permitted. The casting process requires careful foundry control of chemistry, pouring temperature, and cooling rate to achieve the fine-grained microstructure needed for low-temperature toughness.
